Finding the right rug size: How to make your rug fit every room perfectly

Wohnzimmer mit großzügig dimensioniertem Vintage-Teppich unter dem Sofa

Sound familiar? The rug is unwrapped, rolled out – and somehow looks lost in the room. Usually it's not the pattern or the colour, but simply the size. The nice thing: for every room there are simple rules of thumb that make a rug not just fit, but hold the whole room together. We'll walk through them with you, room by room.

Living room: The front-leg rule

One simple rule has proven itself in the living room: the front legs of the sofa and armchairs sit on the rug. This creates a visual unit that holds the seating area together – the rug becomes the stage for your furniture. Plan for about 15 to 20 centimetres of overhang beyond the sofa on each side.

Plenty of space? Even lovelier: when all the furniture sits completely on the rug, the room immediately feels calmer and more generous. What to avoid: a rug floating in the middle of the room without touching a single piece of furniture – that divides the space instead of connecting it.

Dining room: The chair test

The golden rule in the dining room: even when pulled out, all chair legs must still be on the rug. So plan for at least 60 to 70 centimetres of overhang all around the table – that way getting up stays quiet and chairs don't wobble over an edge.

Our tip for this room: a durable low-pile or a washable rug. Crumbs and little mishaps are part of dining – with the right material they stay uncomplicated.

Bedroom: The two-thirds trick

The most popular bedroom solution: the rug lies roughly two-thirds under the bed and extends at least 50 to 60 centimetres on both sides and at the foot. That way your feet land on soft pile in the morning instead of a cold floor – and the bed looks anchored on its own little island.

In smaller rooms, two runners to the left and right of the bed work beautifully too: same effect, less material, easier to wash. And in the bedroom, go ahead and choose soft and high-pile – nobody walks through here in shoes, after all.

Hallway and kitchen: The runner as a quiet hero

Runners are often underestimated: in the hallway they guide the eye through the space, in the kitchen they make long periods of standing more comfortable. Just make sure the runner leaves a narrow strip of floor free on both sides – that way it looks intentional, not like a cover-up. And in the kitchen: better choose a washable one.

“A rug that's allowed to take up space lets the room breathe too.”

Measure, tape, decide

Our favourite trick before buying: mark the dimensions on the floor with painter's tape and, if needed, lay out a bedsheet in that size. You'll be amazed how different 160 × 230 or 200 × 300 centimetres feel in a real room. Ten minutes of effort that saves you a wrong order – and then you can order with complete peace of mind.

With these rules, guesswork becomes a clear plan. And if you're still unsure about a size: just write to us – we'll happily look at your room with you and honestly tell you which size fits best.
