Size guide

Which rug size fits your room?

The size decides more about the effect of a rug than its pattern. Below you will find the rule of thumb for every room, a floor plan for each situation and the German standard sizes that go with it. All measurements are in centimetres.

Four rules before you start

  1. Measure the furniture first. In the living room the sofa decides: the rug should extend 20–30 cm beyond it on both sides.
  2. Let the walls breathe. Leave roughly 30–40 cm of bare floor between the rug and the wall — a rug should not touch it.
  3. When in doubt, size up. A rug that is too small divides the room; a large one pulls the furniture into a single island.
  4. Check your doors. If the rug sits in a door's swing, choose a flat-woven model with a low pile.

Room by room

01Living room

Sofa Table Sofa + 2 × 20–30 cm
The most common layout: the sofa's front legs stand on the rug, the coffee table sits fully on it.
  • The rug should extend 20–30 cm beyond the sofa on both sides — anything narrower makes the room look smaller.
  • The coffee table belongs entirely on the rug.
  • Walking routes should run across the rug, not along its edge.
  • Three common layouts: all legs on (large rooms, most generous look) · front legs on (the safe standard) · table only (compact rooms).

Recommended sizesSmall: 160×230 · Medium: 200×290 · Large: 240×340 or 300×400

02Dining room

Table ≥ 60 cm
The golden rule: when a chair is pulled back, all four legs must still stand on the rug — add at least 60 cm on every side of the table.
  • Rug size = table size + at least 60 cm on every side (75 cm is ideal).
  • Choose a low pile or flat weave — chairs slide far more easily.
  • Rectangular table, rectangular rug; round table, round rug.

Recommended sizes4 seats: 200×290 · 6 seats: 240×340 · 8 seats: 300×400 · Round table: Ø240

03Bedroom

Bed 45–60 cm
Classic layout: the rug covers the lower two thirds of the bed, leaving 45–60 cm of soft ground at the sides and the foot end.
  • Your first step in the morning should land on the rug: leave 45–60 cm on both sides and at the foot of the bed.
  • Place the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, not under the headboard — bedside tables do not have to stand on it.
  • In small rooms, one runner on each side of the bed is a practical alternative.

Recommended sizesSingle bed: 120×170 or 160×230 · Double bed: 200×290 · Large bed: 240×340 or 300×400 · Beside the bed: 80×200 runner

04Children's room

Bed Wardrobe Toys Play area
The rug marks the play area — keep it clear of furniture so the whole surface stays usable.
  • Washability comes first — choose a rug that goes in the machine or can be wiped clean.
  • A soft, dense pile cushions falls; very long shag hides small toys.
  • Keep the play area free of furniture and use an anti-slip underlay.

Recommended sizesPlay area: 120×170 or 160×230 · Large room: 200×290 · Round: Ø160

05Kitchen

Worktop Island Runner 80×200 / 80×300
Lay the runner along the working axis between worktop and island, covering the sink-to-hob route.
  • Go for washable, low-pile rugs with a non-slip backing.
  • Keep both ends of the runner clear of doors and cupboard fronts.
  • Light runners balance a dark floor; patterned, warm tones suit a light one.

Recommended sizesRunner: 80×200 or 80×300 · Small kitchen / in front of the sink: 80×150

06Hallway & entrance

Runner 10–15 cm Hallway length – 30–45 cm
The runner stays 30–45 cm shorter than the hallway, with 10–15 cm of visible floor on each side.
  • The runner should be 30–45 cm shorter than the hallway so the floor stays visible at both ends.
  • Check the door's clearance; if it is tight, pick a flat-woven model.
  • Densely woven, patterned rugs last longest in high-traffic areas.

Recommended sizesRunner: 80×200, 80×250 or 80×300 · Entrance: 80×150 or 120×170

07Outdoors

At least the front legs on the rug
On a terrace or balcony the rug turns a set of furniture into one defined living area.
  • At least the front legs of the seating group belong on the rug; covering the whole group is ideal.
  • Choose water- and UV-resistant, mould-proof materials such as polypropylene.
  • On windy terraces, furniture standing on the rug also keeps it in place.

Recommended sizesTwo-seater group: 160×230 · Lounge group: 200×290 or 240×340
